St. Vincent de Paul Society

The Mission of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is “a network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.” (Taken from The Rule of St. Vincent de Paul Society).Volunteerism is at the heart of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s mission to help neighbors in need. There are two Society Conferences, one at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott and another at St. Thomas Aquinas in Nahant. Both are part of the St. Vincent de Paul Greater Lynn District Council.

The Conference of St. Vincent de Paul at St John the Evangelist serves the community of Swampscott and portion of East Lynn. The Conference at St. Thomas Aquinas serves the community of Nahant. We have been able to meet with our Vincentian brothers and sisters to identify ways to assist those with food insecurity through our food pantry that is open at St. John’s on Tuesdays from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM and Thursdays from 7:00 – 8:00 PM and food vouchers to a local grocery store. The food pantry serves the Swampscott, Lynn, and Nahant communities. We also assist with utilities, heat, displacement, and rent payments as needed. We are 100% dependent on donations to fulfill our mission. Parishioners donate by providing non-perishable food and other household items (i.e. paper products) to our food pantry, depositing cash donations in the poor boxes at all exits at both Churches, making memorial donations and in-kind gifts, and supporting other fundraising activities. We assist our community with clothing and food drives.

We currently are a devoted group of twenty people at St. John’s and fifteen active members and seven associate members at St. Thomas Aquinas that have fun and enjoy a shared fellowship in donating time at the food pantry, gathering at monthly meetings, and planning fundraiser activities to assist others. We share ideas and resources with each other and gather at least quarterly with other area District Councils. We are always looking for dedicated volunteers to join us in this mission where you build community, friends, and support!
